Barking Market SquareBarking's marshlands

Barking Market Square design brings the ecology of the marshland landscape of Barking into the town centre.

On market days East Street Market spills into the new square, at other times it will be a public space. Barking Creek is referenced in the ecology of the willow wall habitats and the pop up play fountains that are sequenced to follow the tidal shifts on the creek.

The tall willow wall encourages wildlife in this urban setting and connects to the river edge. The flowing willow pattern on the surface of the square gives a strong identity – this open, flexible area will contain the market.

The temporary square is designed to last 2-5 years, establishing the space as public domain ahead of the wider town redevelopment plans. The square has a woven wire lace fence with willow leaf pattern and a panoramic photograph of the Barking Riverside forms the backdrop to a space with play mounds and bench seating – a place for rural escape from the urban reality of Barking.
