Kinnear Landscape Architects have been appointed as lead designers by the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames (RBK) to create a proposal for the entrance to Canbury Gardens.
Kingston’s Riverside is set to change, with the development of a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to set the ambition for the Riverside public realm, along with funding from the GLA to improve cycle and pedestrian connections along the riverfront, there is a vision to enhance the quality of riverside spaces throughout the town centre. Canbury Gardens is a well used, mature park, established in the 1890s and rich in leisure and recreation facilities for local residents. Currently the link between this valuable green space and the town centre to the south is poor, with public realm that is designed for vehicular use, despite the predominance of pedestrian and cycle movement along the Riverside. The entrance to Canbury Gardens does little to announce the valuable amenity beyond and is a key space along the Riverside that could be enhanced to redress this issue, providing a an excellent quality space for pedestrians and cyclists, adjacent to the river that strengthens the connection between the park and the town centre. Our proposed treatment of the Entrance to Canbury gardens will greatly enhance the quality of the environment for pedestrians and cyclists and improve access to the river by creating an extension to the public park.
