Crystal Palace Park National Sports Centre

KLA have worked on Crystal Place Park for many years, delivering different projects in various roles both as lead consultant and as sub consultant to others. Projects span across dinosaur and sphinx restoration, new dinosaur café, skate park and this project which is the National Sports Centre. The team brief was to deliver a reconfigured and better integrated National Sports Centre (NSC) in Crystal Palace Park, a Grade II listed landscape.
The following key moves work to make the NSC a fully integrated facility that faces out into the wider park, providing an exciting active space that recognises the site’s history and reflects the landscape context it sits within. • Integration - Ensuring the NSC integrates successfully into the wider park, removing physical and visual barriers, road infrastructure and improving pedestrian access. • Historic Fragments - Recognising the site’s rich history and Paxton’s original vision for the park. Picking up on historic fragments and traces within the landscape and reinstating key historic views and features. • A New Layer of Landscape Typology - Currently, the NSC does not have a strong landscape identity, unbefitting of the parkland context it sits within. A key move for the new scheme will be to introduce a new layer of landscape character into the park, to ensure the sports centre has a clearer identity. • Play into Sport - A key driver for the project as a whole is to encourage more people into formal sport through play. The external space around the NSC provides a unique opportunity to create an active programme; within which relationships and proximities of sport and play create a gateway to sport.
