Hackney Marshes

A marshland landscape with sports within contrasting River and Canal environments

Hackney Marshes are located at the eastern edge of Hackney, in the Lea Valley adjacent to the Olympic Park. The marshes have a huge importance to grass roots football, with up to 100 pitches located there; historically it was used for cultivation and there were ancient routes through the site.

KLA undertook an access study of the Marsh in order to integrate the individual projects on Hackney Marshes – the new North Marsh Sports Pavilion, two new bridges over the River Lea and Lea Navigation, the entrance from Homerton Road and the access to the new Hackney Marshes Centre on the South Marsh.

The wayfinding concept underlines the shift from urban to rural - signage will identify your position within the Lea Valley, within the urban context or the ecological features of the marshes. The aim is to improve simple landscape legibility.
