North Woolwich Stationpublic realm scheme

Create London secured funding from the London Regeneration Fund (LRF) for the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Old North Woolwich Station. The building will provide high quality studios for creative businesses and artists.

The project will bring back to life an important local landmark with the fit out sensitive to the existing building, which is Grade II listed, as well as running a rigorous programme of training and education.

KLA were asked by Create to undertake a project scoping exercise for a wider community garden / public realm scheme. KLA’s work will be used as a tool with which to secure buy-in from TfL and Crossrail. We were asked to identify some key opportunities and broad strategies for the site, producing an ambitious scheme and a series of illustrative drawings.

We proposed the creation of a linear green space, a safe alternative route separate from the adjacent busy road serving the Woolwich ferry. Transforming the old turning circle into a sunken garden and restoration of the original railway architecture will reinforce the site’s locomotive past. Community growing and outpost studios will activate the linear park. This new green space will improve connectivity in the area and provide a legible path that supports ecology and creativity.
