Olympic Greenway CompetitionBiodiversity for the Olympic Park entrance

A three kilometer route from West Ham to Victoria Park connecting to the Olympic Park.

The design proposes to make the Greenway green…….. A permanent wide path and two sacrificial zones of crushed concrete either side would be fully used during the Olympics in 2012 as a pedestrian route to the Park. After the end of the games, the sacrificial zones will be colonised by a rich herb layer of plants. This would support a vibrant insect life and promote biodiversity in the increase of bird species listed in the Biodiversity Action Plan – linnet, black redstart, song thrush, sparrows and also foraging bats.

Increasing safety on the Greenway is paramount. Lit landmarks are placed along the route, incorporating dramatic lighting displays.

An addition of gardens and allotments to the sides of the route would also diversify vegetation types and make the route safer and more populated. Play zones are situated along the way, bringing more families onto the path, and seating areas would also increase visitor numbers.
